How To Take Back Control Of Client Acquisition | 87

Jul 09, 2023

I want to share a harsh reality of the creative industry – no one’s coming to save your creative business.

Clients aren't lining up to work with you. Your thousands of Instagram followers aren't here to save you. The key to success lies in your own hands.

Sounds challenging, right? But also incredibly empowering.

Instead of sitting back and waiting for clients to come to you, go out there and find those clients.

I’m diving deep into the key aspect of becoming a self-reliant creative. It’s time to take back control and own your responsibility. As a creative professional, your path to success is not paved by becoming the best at your craft.

Yes, your skills and creativity are important. But the big secret is that you need to master the art of outreach.

The Big Realization

Years ago I was stuck in the limiting belief that perfecting my skills and producing great work would be enough to attract big clients.

I put time and effort in building an impressive portfolio and a beautiful website, hoping to get noticed by big brands.

But after months of waiting with little to no progress, I started questioning my strategy.

What was I missing?

I spent months trying to figure this out myself and then I enrolled in an online course.

The answer became clear - I had to be proactive.

These successful creatives were not just waiting around. They were pitching themselves, reaching out, and learning from each rejection.

That’s when I realized I had to take the reins of my business into my own hands.

It's On You

Once you realize that your business success is your responsibility, you’re already on the path to success.

Creative ability is on one side of the coin. The other is your ability to pitch, your determination to fail, learn, and keep moving.

I knew talented photographers (way better than me), who were not getting clients. They were waiting for the clients to come to them. I decided to be different and take control.

But here’s the catch – this path is not for everyone. If you care mainly about the art and not the business aspect, the entrepreneurial journey might not be the best fit.

There's no shame in working as a professional photographer or videographer for someone else’s business. What's important is doing what makes you happy and satisfied.

But, if you're willing to embrace the freedom of working for yourself, building your own company, and diving into the business side of things, this path is incredibly rewarding.

You’ll face the lowest lows and the highest highs. If you’re ready to accept that your success or failure is up to you, and with a mix of hard work, smart work, and a bit of luck, you'll get there.

Putting In The Work

Here's a quick blueprint on how to get clients:

  1. Website and Portfolio: These are essential. Your website is your digital storefront where you show your prospects what you're all about. A well-curated portfolio displays your expertise and showcases the breadth and quality of your work.
  2. Outreach: Once your website and portfolio are set, you need to drive traffic to them. Compile a list of companies that you want to reach out to, and start sending cold emails. Craft a captivating opening line, add a credibility statement, and end with an ask for a call to share ideas.
  3. The Pitch: Once you’ve got the call, listen to their needs, show them how you can help, and present your offer. After that, send a proposal. A positive response, and voila! You've got your first client.

Latest from Chris

Each week seems to fly by crazy fast recently. I’m head down inside of Creative Biz Launch making this the best training for creatives out there. In our latest coaching call, I taught my students the key to getting more stuff done in a day, energy management, and had some great Q+A. I love getting this type of face time with my students where we can really dive into issues they’re facing in their business.

I’ve spent a lot of time training my team recently to offload more and more of my administrative and marketing work so I can best serve the community inside the program. Can’t wait to see you in there :)
